Slavnik is the southernmost thousand-metre mountain in Slovenia, just 20 km from the Adriatic coast. It is easily accessible, with many easy paths leading to it from all directions. The most popular starting point is Podgorje, a village below the southern slope – a 500-meter ascent takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Several long-distance trails cross Slavnik, the most important being the Slovenia Mountain Trail and the European Long Distance Hiking Trail E6 from Finland to Greece.
It is accessible all year round but is least enjoyable in summer when it is too hot.
It offers outstanding views of the nearby sea, Koper and Trieste, and to the northwest and north, the view reaches as far as the Dolomites, the Carnic, Julian and Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and the Karavanke Mountains.
A few steps below the summit is a Tuma’s mountain hut, open all year round on weekends and offers delicious snacks, stews, and desserts.
