No Free Lunch For My New Friend

Family Bonds

24 Jul

The story began with an unusual event a few weeks ago. I was mowing the lawn, and suddenly a blackbird started jumping around me. It was hopping around the trimmed part of the lawn, looking for earthworms. Quite understandably, the cut grass suddenly no longer offers enough shelter for worms, insects, and other bird food. But until now, I was used to birds searching for food after the mowing. This time, however, a blackbird hopped around me while I was mowing, not more than 2 meters away from me and the rumbling mower.

The video story (if you prefer to read the story, please continue below the video):

The friendship continued in the following days. Or so it seemed to me. Several times a day, I was disturbed by loud chirping. The scene was always the same – a blackbird sitting on the balcony railing, with a fat earthworm in its beak, calling loudly to me. At least, it seemed that way to me. All the male birds look alike, but somehow I felt it was always the same bird.

Then, a week ago, there was a breakthrough. I heard strange noises coming from the kitchen, went to look, and saw a blackbird fly past me into the living room and out the balcony door. Of course, I thought the poor thing must have accidentally passed in through the open door.

I sat back down at my desk and resumed my work. But after a few minutes, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a blackbird hopping from the balcony and wandering into the kitchen, and a few moments later, it came back and flew off with a piece of cat food in its beak. A few minutes later, it was back for another bite. It seems to have a nest somewhere with always hungry young.

The most exciting thing was that it was not afraid of me. During one of his visits, a piece of cat food fell from his beak and rolled in my direction. It did not twitch but confidently picked up the food and left.

Anyway, my new friend has obviously discovered that we have cat food in the kitchen and is busily going for it. Well, it did, until a few days ago. When, by chance, both the blackbird and our kitten came to lunch simultaneously, the meeting was not friendly. The blackbird managed to escape happily, but it seemed it would take a while to regain its courage. There is no free lunch.

Stay tuned!
